The project
The Ateliers Médicis supports new emerging artists, diverse and original – and accompanies artists whose language and process is both unique and contemporary.
They also support the creation of works conceived in collaboration with French territories and the people living there. Each year, the Ateliers Médicis offer residencies to artists from a range of disciplines.
Located in Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil, in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis, on the outskirts of Paris, the Ateliers Médicis is currently in a temporary, preparatory venue. An ambitious large scale building will be designed and constructed by 2025, confirming the importance of artistic creation in the suburbs.
An unprecented cultural adventure
The Ateliers Médicis will be a place for research, for creation and for community outreach, located in Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil, in an area east of Paris which will soon have its own subway station. It will connect to the upcoming automated rapid transit network, the Grand Paris Express, which will encompass a large area around Paris. The Ateliers Médicis is moving forward toward the deployment of a new artistic venue in 2025.
Since early 2016, the Ateliers Médicis project has been developing, with the creation of a public Establishment for Cultural Cooperation, with two principal goals: to build a venue dedicated to young creation, to emerging artists and cultures, as well as experimenting and imagining the arts in Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil. This will be a large‑scale project of metropolitan, national and international dimensions which will open in Montfermeil in 2025.
As a part of the massive project called the “Grand Paris of Culture,” the Ateliers Médicis will implement their range of activities and missions in sync with the region and a future metro station in the Grand Paris Express transit network. They will be participating in the development, the opening up and the creation of connections throughout the region, in an important process of urban renewal.
The first venue
The first home to the Ateliers Médicis, which opened in June 2018, is an essential step in the conception of the future, much larger cultural venue. Its mission is to be – until the new location is inaugurated in 2025, a laboratory for artistic experimentation and cultural initiatives. It is also a space for hosting and explaining the upcoming changes, as well as focusing on the continuing development of the venue and its plans.
